Bringing Personality Back To The Web
Generic web layouts have become somewhat of a misnomer in conversations circling around web design these days. As creatives, we’re bored and slightly annoyed by how predictable and uninspired most web experiences have become. How do we break out of predictable and boring designs without breaking the usability and functionality of our experiences?
In this talk, Vitaly Friedman, the co-founder of Smashing Magazine, will shed some light into a strategy of how to bring personality back to web design, and how we can make our experiences more humane while also having a higher ROI. Beware: you might not be able to unlearn what you’ll learn in this session. Bonus: you’ll see some slightly dirty examples of things being done out there, so bring along some pragmatism to this talk.
This Is How We Work at Smashing
A very self-centric story about the origins of Smashing Magazine, where it came from, how it has evolved over time, and some of the things we’ve learned the hard way. A very honest session about what’s happening behind the scenes, the team, the workflow, the tooling, the process, the principles we follow and what helps us avoid issues down the line.
In this session, Vitaly will be exploring everything from how to build a team and grow the culture within it, how we hire people, how we ensure stability within the team and avoid troubles — by working 100% remote. We’ll also look into what we use to work and collaborate, how we make decisions and how we plan things and make them happen.
How To Win Friends and Influence People, On Mobile
GDPR cookie consent prompts, push notifications, app install prompts, video autoplays and annoying pop-ups. Every time we enter a new site, it feels like a fight against all the annoying marketing messages endlessly streaming at us. However, more often than not, all these solutions are used without considering the bigger picture. They help with short-term conversion, but they hurt in long-term retention.
How do we bring them together? In this session, Vitaly will be exploring mobile design patterns, techniques, strategies and important decisions to consider when designing and building websites and applications that respect customers and increase conversion. You’ll walk away with a toolbox of applicable techniques, a couple of arguments for your managers and reliable case studies that debunk common myths on mobile.

Embedding Service Design in your Organisation through Journey Maps
Service design established itself as a now wide-spread approach to innovate services – or more generally to innovate experiences of customers, employees, and citizens.
In his talk, Marc briefly describes service design for those new to it, but then focus on the difference between theory and practice of using service design to really have an impact on people. He outlines how you can embed service design sustainably in organizations along the "12 commandments of service design”.
Finally, Marc introduces a new way of using Journey Maps to coordinate all projects impacting customer and employee experience across organisational silos.

Workshop
Smart Responsive Interface Design Patterns, 2020 Edition (94% happiness rate)
Are you ready for a design challenge? In this brand new workshop, Vitaly Friedman, creative lead and front-end/UI consultant behind Smashing Magazine, will be taking a microscopic examination of common interface components and problems appearing in responsive user interfaces. In this workshop, we’ll be spending an entire day drawing and designing responsive interfaces, starting from accordions, to date/time pickers, sliders, feature comparisons, car configurators all the way to insurance calculators and trip planners.
The workshop is intended for intermediate/advanced designers and developers who have an understanding of responsive design, interface design and mobile design. Most techniques are borrowed from mid-size and large-scale real-life projects, such as large eCommerce projects, online magazines and web applications. We won't cover the basics, instead, the workshop covers more advanced — and often obscure and innovative techniques.
WHAT WILL THE WORKSHOP COVER?
In this workshop, we’ll go hands-on into exploring:
- Insights into how people interact with mobile interfaces and what it means for thumb-optimized designs
- Navigation, with accordions, mega-drop-downs, breadcrumbs, carousels and filters,
- Builders and customizers, diving into details of a car configurator and a mobile plan builder,
- Forms, with email verification, password input, country selector, sliders, error validation, incl. public transportation and a banking transaction UI,
- Date pickers, date range picker and a time picker, incl. booking an appointment and booking an airline ticket,
- Calendars, with a multi-track schedule, TV Guide schedule, music festival schedule, exhibition calendar, spreadsheets and dashboard,
- Tables, with a feature comparison table, currency exchange calculator, pricing plans,
- Timelines, with a historical timelines, soccer game signature and live leaderboard and standings,
- Maps / Data Visualization, with a shopping mall map, election map, smart region input.
- Onboarding and offboarding UX for higher conversion and retention rates,
- Search, with autocomplete, filters, search results,
- Audio/Video, with a video player UI and audio-based input,
- Authentication patterns, CAPTCHA and 2-factor-authentication,
- Privacy UX, incl. GDPR cookie consent prompts, push notifications, pop-ups, permissions UX and data management,
- Footnotes and sidenotes in magazine articles,
- Seat selection, for a concert/theatre/exhibition and a perfect airplane check-in,
- Responsive art direction with practical techniques, strategies and examples for less generic solutions,
- Responsive PDF for documents and restaurant menus,
- Offline UX techniques and strategies,
- Design anti-patterns to avoid to prevent running into maintenance issues and “slow UX decay”.
WHAT HARDWARE/SOFTWARE DO YOU NEED?
You'll need to bring a lot of creativity with your preferred coffee mug. We’ll be spending a lot of time drawing, sketching, designing and thinking. Be ready to challenge your general view of design process and how our interface should look like. Laptop is useeful but not really necessary. You’ll need a lot of sleep reserves since it’s going to be a packed day. Bring a lot of attention to detail and non-standard thinking to this one! ;-)
Scaling Design through Journey Maps
A masterclass on how to embed and scale service design throughout organizations by using journey maps as a customer-centric management tool for agile organizations.
Nowadays, organizations run dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of agile projects that all impact customer and/or employee experience. Only few of these projects are innovation or design projects – many of these are changes in SOPs, implementing legal changes (such as GDPR), IT updates, and so on. These projects impact CX/EX, but are hardly coordinated. In general, organizations struggle with managing multiple agile teams.
Journey Maps are typically used as a design tool. However, in this workshop you’ll learn how to use Journey Maps to manage and track a whole range of projects impacting the CX/EX. Using Journey Map this way can help you identify overlaps and contradictions between running and planned projects. Marc will provide hands-on tips how to set this up in your organization or in your client's organization, and share 20 lessons learned on how to embed and scale service design in organizations.
